Weird things that have happened this week:
It’s raining a lot. I mean, more than usual. Days and days of rain. Nothing but the sound of spattering drops on the roof, interspersed with bouts of overcast skies and the lulling sound of wind like waves through the woods.
There are noises outside the window. Weird ones. I’ve heard cats and dog and coyotes, opossums and raccoons and deer, but this is a dry, hacking hiss of something I can’t name.
While cutting wood in the woods, there was a naked dog. Not short hair, not shaved, but hairless completely in a way that didn’t look like mange. It was a big dog, and it didn’t seem as scared as a completely feral dog might. Tried to get close, but it scampered off a bit before stopping to watch warily. Tried again, then again, and each time it would go a bit before looking back to make sure it was followed.
Tree frogs are out. I can see them hopping out everywhere. Little thumb size things at the biggest. Can’t hear them at night, though. They should be cheeping.
There are a lot of worms in the garden plot. Probably because the rain is forcing them up, but it’s vaguely unnerving to dig a trowel in and see the clumps of them writhe at the end. Hopefully, they make good bait.
