trans* is supposed to be an umbrella term for all genderqueer people, because in computer language if you search a term and add an asterisk at the end it will search for that term and all similar things.
I'm not sure why it's negative but I'm assuming that it's because its an umbrella term to replace the umbrella term that is "transgender" It was meant to separate the genderqueer people from the "actually trans" people. I'm not sure why they don't use genderqueer as the umbrella term (with transgender included) though because queer is the umbrella term for lgbt+ so it would make sense that for gender they would use genderqueer. It could also be that it is an umbrella term and people don't like umbrella terms (even though we use them quite often in other cases...)
But yeah those are just guesses idk why its negative. I feel like a lot of people don't know what it means and use it as an abbreviation of transgender, which is what I assumed it was until I actually looked it up just now. It's amazing how with all of the hundreds of fancy charts and powerpoints about the different sexualities and genders not one has included that tiny detail.
