“This is Bee.” Melshi gave him a very courteous nod and Bix leaned in and assured him, deadly earnest, “He’s been entrusted with my wellbeing.”

“What, because of me?”  

“No,” she laughed at the mild alarm in his eyes, tearing off a hunk of her bread. “No, more… generally speaking.”

To his credit, he looked to be giving it rather serious contemplation. “He wasn’t with you in the hangar bay.”

“Well, the Intel folk think he’s a walking security risk.”

Bee’s head pivoted immediately to her and he protested, “I d-d-don’t walk.”

Bix swallowed around a mouthful and shrugged.

“Entrusted by whom, dare I ask?”

Admittedly, Bee was not exactly anyone’s vision of security droid. “By C-C-Cassian.”

“What’s a Cassian?”

Not really a subject for a winding-down, post-adrenaline breakfast chat. “Ohh,” she went for nonchalant. “Friend of a sort. He swooped in out of nowhere to save me from certain death, never to be seen or heard from again.”

Bee let out a sad little trill; Bix patted him atop the head. Melshi mulled that over a slow sip of his drink, nodded his understanding, and commiserated, “I’ve got one of those.”

She didn’t follow. “A droid?”

“Someone who did the impossible, saved my life, and vanished.” He paused and considered and corrected, “Or maybe I vanished. Splitting up was safer; didn’t really know each other that well, or that long, to be honest. I think we were friends, in the end.”
