not sure what you’re reading, but if they’re anything like the gender studies grad students i’ve hung around it’s because they get most of their talking points from tumblr, not other (“outdated and elitist”) texts.
That is 100% a problem with grad students in the humanities and social sciences (and I can’t even imagine how bad it is in gender studies, at least in my department it’s only like, two people), but there are also Actual Published Academics who have stretched it to mean just “forcing heterosexuality on everyone.”
I’m about to commit the ultimate academic sin lol but you can find linked examples on the “in males” subsection of the Wikipedia page on “compulsory heterosexuality”
