like ok we can let circe talk about how she turned odysseus’ men into pigs because she couldn’t trust them! they would have harmed her! but only if we go out of our way to have those men reassure her that they have no intent to hurt her. because of course we can’t have our “good guys” be the type of men who would brutalize and rape women simply because they could. so these men never would have hurt circe! but see we’re ACKNOWLEDGING that she feels that they might have. don’t you see how we made her look irrational and vindictive and cruel but in an empowering way??
no see melantho WANTED to help antinous. she chose to betray penelope! and it was a betrayal of penelope and not a betrayal of odysseus so see look how empowering it is when penelope throws melantho out into the slaughter of the suitors! melantho the slave girl had agency and she chose to be with antinous so it’s okay that we allowed her to be slaughtered brutally! feminism!
we could NEVER include odysseus’ hanging of the enslaved women after the slaughter of the suitors. we can’t have our hero odysseus do such a thing! we’ll let penelope do it though :) just a little bit with melantho but she deserved it :3 feminism <3
see look we cast a black woman as helen of troy! famously one of the most beautiful women in all of greek mythology surely you can’t have a problem with that! ignore the fact that we added a part where her husband deliberately mutilated her as punishment for being so beautiful. and look! we let her play her “twin” sister clytemnestra too — yes, the clytemnestra that brutally murdered her husband but we explained why it was justified! black women should be allowed to play violent characters! would you rather us cast NO black women? don’t you know these are the only two options?
it’s okay though because we also cast zendaya as athena and utterly defanged her. she’s in virginal white robes the whole time and she plays the divine manifestation of odysseus’ guilt over the sack of troy. she’s no warrior goddess, she would never condone war or violence! good women don’t do such things!
we gave all these women agency don’t you see! we let them talk about and address these problems! and don’t worry, all the main male “hero” characters really are good guys who would never really do anything to hurt them. so really the women didn’t really need to go into all of that but we want YOU to know that They’re Strong Women who would never let themselves be victimized by the patriarchal ideals that they’re subjected to. in fact, we did our best to remove the evidence of these ideals at all! that’s why we made sure the good guys would never treat women badly. look we absolved them AND we let the women call them out. sure now it looks like most of the women are overreacting and vindictive because we didn’t want to make you think about our Heroes doing those things ever in the first place. but that’s fine right because really we did BOTH things you wanted us to do so why are you complaining?
“nolan’s odyssey is a take on the effects of war on a person’s psyche” im glad we got another movie about how we need to feel bad for the (white) soldier that killed people because look how much killing those people affected him. i think that we were really lacking in movies that explored that perspective
like on top of being a dogshit adaptation it’s also just. a bad movie
