***((Actually, that’s a good question, Anon. =P I headcanon that Romulans that are born female do experience periods, but that they’re further spaced and a little more intense than human periods. Being that they’re such a moody race anyway, they probably have extreme mood swings (but less fatigue) and a very very VERY heightened sex drive during these times (like Pon Farr, but waaaaayyy toned down from their Vulcan cousins’). They probably either balance it with copper supplements (their blood is copper-based like ours is iron-based) and hormone-balancing medications or just learn to deal with it. Being that an uncontrolled mood can lead to vulnerability, Romulans don’t like to make a big deal out of their periods. So, where a human might mention to their close friend, “Man, I’m on my period and am really tired and cranky today…” or “Can I borrow a tampon??” a Romulan would be extremely tight-lipped about it for fear of appearing vulnerable. In addition, their period toiletries (like pads or tampons) are probably provided to them free of charge.
Hmm…thinking about it now, they probably actually have successfully created a way to either stop or slow periods (like some form of birth control) that can be undone if the Romulan in question ever wants to have a child. After all, a period is a huge pain in the ass, and why wouldn’t they try to think of a way to make their drones people able to perform more efficiently at all times? Besides this, I’ve always headcanoned that both Romulans and Vulcans have extremely effective birth control methods because why in the heck would you want to risk having a child that you can’t take care of? It just wastes time and resources, in their eyes.
