    “now -- what’s this?” thomas asks over his cup of tea, taking note of the brooding assistant cook. “why the long face?” he and daisy have known each other for years and years... he may not have friends but daisy is perhaps the closest thing TO a friend. “what’s happened?” there’s a pause and some HUMOR in his tone. until he remembers that young man who’d come over before with vegetables from one of the farms --

“oh don’t tell me it was that farmer boy, again? does he not know how to take NO for an answer?” he huffs, sipping his tea. “if he wants to COURT you, the least he could do is wash the dirt off his face.” | @ofdownton

He supposed he knew exactly howshe felt, but he didn’t say as much. It shouldn’t really have surprised him,for Mary to be this frank with him. Evelyn had always valued the authenticitythat their friendship had—there was a time that he had wanted to marry her, butit didn’t feel like that was the only reason she was interested in him. Even whenit became clear that his feelings for her weren’t mutual, that relationship hadendured. That was what led to his convalescing here at Downton instead of Middlesbrough.

He was silent for a moment,considering what she had told him. “I think your cousin is being a fool.” hedecided, taking a sip of his lemonade and not daring to gauge her reaction. Itwas the most candid thing he believed he ever said to her. It was also, herealized, hypocritical, given the fact that he had broken a very publicengagement three years ago. “Well, if things don’t work themselves out, wecould always have a go at it. A viscount isn’t an earl but it’s not too shabby, if I do say so myself.” he teased.

Anna grinned merrily, putting a hand on John’s arm as she answered, “Of course. You’re very welcome, because it’s very true.” Her smile widened a bit as he slid his opinion of her own beauty into the conversation. “I do approve, very much.” It was so nice to see him dressed up, but not in his uniform. It seemed a pity such a thing only occurred on occasions such as their anniversary, but such was their life, and she found she didn’t really mind too much. She was too busy enjoying this day for what it was, honestly. “Happy Anniversary, Mr. Bates,” Anna replied in kind, before chuckling as she said, “I certainly hope not. Lady Mary and I have both had this planned for a week, and even I shall be a little cross if she tries to change our plans this close to actually making it to our evening out.”

Your portrayal of Thomas is /perfect/. Every time I read a reply to our threads or even threads with others I can hear Thomas perfectly. You really know how to capture the tone of his voice, but you also know how to make him your own. Your love for the character shows in how you write the emotions that he shares with others or emotions that he keeps to himself. I love Thomas and you just have such a talent at making his character come to life. It's such a joy to write with you and to know you.

Evelyn stirred the cup of tea, nodding silently at Mary’swords. He was well acquainted with the feeling. After Meredith had died, eventhe simple things had become difficult. It took him months to even leave thehouse. It was hard looking at Vicky for too long because she reminded him somuch of her mother. It was Olivia who had convinced him that he needed to livefor Vicky’s sake if not for his own. It had started with small things—visitingthe factories, talking with the agent, seeing Vicky for a couple of hoursbefore dinner—and eventually he had managed to find the motivation to reenterhis social circle. His heart broke for Mary when he learned that she was goingthrough the same thing.

“I won’t lie to you and say that it’s easy.” It had beenthree years since his wife’s death, and the pain had never completely subsided.“But you have to keep yourself occupied, and keep at it.”
