Welcome to your weekly round up of new and notable books and gifts.Today we'll be focusing on three of our more interesting gifts that will help you beat the summer heat.

Summer is the perfect time for camping and barbecuing, but what campfire isn't complete without a scary story? Ghost Story Dice aim to solve that problem. Notes on Art and Cooking at Off Square Books by Andrew Pearcy

Welcome to your weekly roundup of new notable books and gifts at Off Square. This week we will be focusing on two of our newest titles: A Super Upsetting Cookbook About Sandwiches by Tyler Kord and Deceptive Desserts by Christine McConnell.         

While sandwiches are delicious all year round, there's nothing quite like a good sandwich in the summer heat, especially if you're picnicking. Tyler Kord understands the importance of the perfect sandwich, so to help us on the road to lunch nirvana he created a book of out of this world sandwiches. It's upsetting because it all looks so good it's hard to decide which to try first.          

He runs the gamut from vegetarian to carnivore, so there's something for everybody. While he teaches you how to make the perfect lunchmeats yourself, using ingredients on hand as substitutes is pretty easy, and given the creativity involved definitely in the spirit. The one thing I wouldn't skip is the chapter on sauces, because the sauce can make or break a sandwich. As a teaser, here's the name of one such sauce: Grape Jelly Mayo.

Deceptive Desserts tells you almost everything you need to know right in the title. It's a cookbook of desserts designed to deceive the audience in very creative ways. Before I get too ahead of myself, let me back up for a second and discuss a similar cookbook, Nerdy Nummies by Rosanna Pansino. It is a very straightforward, easy to use cookbook with simple recipes that can be turned into incredibly nerdy desserts The techniques she uses to decorate and make her creations are simple and fun for any age level. McConnell channels all of that creativity into a more challenging and more rewarding set of recipes. Featuring step by step instructions on how to create not just the desserts, but how to craft and hide stands, support poles, and decorations.   

Almost everything is edible and fondant free, which is a huge plus in my book, and besides, where else are you going to learn how to create an edible facehugger from the movie Alien? If you like baking and crafts, this is the perfect cookbook for you.

On the gift front, we just received a shipment of vintage maps that are already framed and ready to hang. We have world maps, United States maps, and maps of the solar system. Happy Reading!

Notes On Art and Cooking at Off Square Books, By Andrew Pearcy

Welcome to your weekly round up of new and notable books and gifts. Today we'll be focusing on two of our newest titles: Southern Appetizers by Denise Gee and Surfing by Jim Heimann. 

Just in time for the summer holidays, Southern Appetizers collects the most popular (and delicious) finger foods, dips, and cocktails. Having read more than my fair share of cookbooks, I was really impressed that even the fanciest dishes use ingredients that are readily available year round, making this book perfect for any occasion. The recipes themselves are also fairly straightforward, and while some may be time consuming the end result is worth it. Gee also helpfully includes a section on party planning--even impromptu parties are covered. Overall, this is a solid cookbook that is easy to use and makes a great gift.

You may have seen Surfing appear in some of our recent social media posts, but I wanted to take a closer look at it. Heimann's book chronicles the history of surfing from the 1700s to the present. The history is broken up by an amazing array of prints, charts, and pictures from the storied history of the sport. These include portraits of native Hawaiians and explorers, diagrams explaining the evolution of the surfboard, and a host of fascinating movie posters, album covers, and art inspired by the cult of surfing. It's a really fun book for anyone who is interested in surfing or culture. 

I also wanted to showcase one of our many fun gifts, and that is our socks. We have a hard time keeping them in stock, so a new shipment is always cause for celebration, so be sure to stop by and check them out.
