Stede clicked off the TV and tsked, “See, petal? That’s why I don’t want you to play.” They had been working on her most recent Social Studies project: a poster on the California Gold Rush. Pipe cleaners and Elmer’s glue was all over their coffee table. Gold glitter was rampant, and Stede was not looking forward to finding it in every crevice on his body later. Alma rolled her eyes, “Oh come on, dad! That’s professional! That could never happen to me!” Alma batted her eyes, sliding the sign up sheet towards her father. Stede saw Mary had already signed off on it. Now he rolled his eyes and huffed, “Fine. But I’m going to be a nuisance out of spite.” “I knew you’d say that dad,” she tackled him with a hug after he signed, “I love you!” Stede brought a hand to pet down his daughter’s growing mane of hair, holding her a little closer as he said, “I love you too, petal.”
