Off-road driving is a great family-friendly adventure, but understanding the limitations and capabilities of both your vehicle and you is crucial when on a tour using your four-wheel drive. Damage and scratching on the vehicle's body are not recommended for all adventurers. For you to be able to travel off-road without damaging your vehicle you must know a few tricks and tips that you can use!
Many people believe they're ready to take on the terrain of off-roading and, with the ability to control traction on-demand with adjustable suspensions, as well as advanced advancements in the field of differential technology, vehicles are now more prepared for off-roading than ever.
However, just because you've been blessed with a badass off-road car and a hazy concept of where you can find the most challenging trail does not mean you're prepared to go head-on. Off-roading can be difficult, technical, and risky, and shouldn't be undertaken lightly, no matter the level of readiness you feel.
Anyone from novices to veteran bushwalkers will always be able to learn something new. We've put together a collection of simple tips to learn before setting off for your next adventure.
1. Do not go out by yourself. Even a quick trip can be costly when you make a mistake. It is impossible to anticipate everything that could go wrong, but being prepared with equipment for recovery and a well-maintained vehicle will aid. Imagine being off the road with your vehicle and having an accident or your car fails or somebody is wounded... what should you do? If you have a second vehicle your chances of returning safely will be greatly increased.
2. Take a look at the weather: Simply put, heavy rain can turn 4 trails turn to eight very quickly. There are limitations on what even the toughest vehicle can handle. Being stuck could make the difference between a day of fun in the 4x4 and a week of waiting for emergency rescue.
3. Make a plan Do not just Google look up the most challenging trail close to you and it. Be patient and get familiar by using an aerial view or, better yet, take a ride-along with someone familiar with the trail you're looking at. So that you don't go in a blind spot, you know precisely how long it's likely to take the trail, and you've got a plan for the direction you're taking to notify an emergency search team if the trail turns south.
4. Fill up the fuel tank before each excursion. When you arrive at your destination, fill it up before heading out on the trails. The one thing you do not want to do is to start thinking about running out of gasoline while off-road. Be aware of the One-Third/Two-Third Rule. Make use of one-third of a tank to get to where you want to go and leave two-thirds to get out. If your tank of fuel doesn't provide enough capacity to handle the off-road portion of the journey, make sure you have extra fuel or consider rethinking the route you're taking.
5. Spare tire for the spare tire If you have space to spare, you should carry a spare tire and wheel. At a minimum have the repair kit in the event of a need. Nothing is more frustrating than an additional flat tire during the same journey.
6. Emergency Kit - Have an emergency kit to cover any emergency that goes above first aid. This could include special medications or poison ivy treatments, etc. Take a look at this list
7. Tool Kit A tool kit that will cover the basic requirements of your vehicle. Create your kit and don't rely on any of the Christmas present kits that are just garbage in a pouch. Use top-quality tools.
8. Take note of your seating position when driving off-road take a slouch upright position and loose grip on the steering wheel, Be careful not to place your thumbs in the middle section. This will enable you to enjoy a comfortable drive with less strain on your spine. It will prevent injury to your thumbs if the steering wheel should be pushed violently as you go over a rock or rut.
