kwon heejin: daughter of an excessive heroin user and an underground fighter. the two were in love, if at least for a moment. it only lasted a few years, as her drug problem was becoming increasingly difficult to control and his temper was nothing less than dangerous and quite terrifying to those around him. it was the last moments before anyone noticed these things about the couple that the child was born. it was a premature delivery due to her mother’s needs and she spent most of her first few months in hospitals, being tested, poked, and prodded. once she left the stale odor of chemicals and was unhinged from the tubes and monitors, her parents’s showed no love for her. even as a small child, when she would cry out, her mother would shoot herself up once more and slam the door. and her father’s income was growing scarce, his work dwindling as he sustained injuries in his older age.
as she grew, things about her odd family started to seem normal to her. only bad girls get hit, she would repeat it to herself over and over as she silently sobbed herself to sleep every night. no one ever questioned it, they were too scared to. if anything, some families just assumed she was training to fight like her father. her mother’s addiction only got worse, and she was moving on to more dangerous drugs. heejin’s father always reminded her, she was to take care of her mother no matter the circumstance.
at the age of 16, her mother died of an overdose on the living room couch while heejin was attending school. when she found her, she ran to the bedroom closet in fear of her father’s punishment. she hid, with a knife pressed close to her chest and held her breath until she heard her father’s footsteps walk through the door. a shout of anger, a crash, and then barreling footsteps toward her room. she shut her eyes tight as she heard the door swing open and crash against the wall, splintering the drywall in the process. through the slits in the closet she watched as her father destroyed the only place in the house in which she could call home. finally, he made his way to the closet door, pulling it from it’s hinges and finding a shaking heejin. the knife in her trembling hands almost fell to the ground as he grabbed her petite form and threw it across the room.
she noticed that with the force, she had cut her leg and blood was trickling down her thigh. her father was standing in the doorway of the closet, staring at her with fury in his eyes. she barely even remembers what happened next, she screamed as he made his way toward her and she ran as hard as she could.
she sustained a broken rib and bruises all along her body by the end of it as she stared into her parent’s dead eyes. her father’s torso was nothing but stab wounds, dried blood caking his shirt. her mother’s mouth was puffy with saliva and she was pale as snow.
she left with only a pack of clothes and the drug money she had found in her mother’s purse. it wasn’t much, but enough for her to skip town. she found herself in hongdae after a black out, sleeping on a bench with nothing to cover her but the sweatshirt on her back. the money in her bag was gone, either stolen or spent she didn’t know. she still had the bills stuffed in her pockets and bra and at least that was enough to get herself a meal. she was found by a woman, eating alone on a street bench in the cold. the woman took her to a shelter for young women, telling her she’d be safe there. desperate for a good meal and a bed, she played along. when they asked her for her name she told them “nina kwon” and everything else was unknown to her. she told them she was born in the states and that her parents died in an accident. a lie to which she would convince herself was true.
she found work, with a woman whose name she would never really know. she was given clothing and shelter, with a move to ilsan, and that’s all she could ask for. the only thing she knew for sure was that this is how she gets money. she goes to lavish parties, auctions, dresses in the finest clothing and jewelry, and then ... she gets the gold.

• she was born in seoul, to a family of doctors ( a neurosurgeon and a pediatrician, tho she’s not rly good with other medical terms ) so pretty much all of her childhood was spent in a luxurious Gangnam apartment with marble floors and floor length windows and sculptures … some of which she may have broken but !! beside the point !!
• her parents do try to make her interested in medicine from a very young age but she just .. straight up refuses? there’s literally nothing she finds interesting in medicine and she just can’t imagine herself being stuck doing smth so boring so shes just like :)) no :))

• so she makes her parents enroll her in a gymnastics class – the best one they can find, obviously, bc they won’t settle for anything less. she’s a natural, her instructor tells her parents as they stand to the side, a couple of months into her training. she simply soars. if she keeps this up, she’s def got a future here
• and he says the same thing as she gets her first olympic medal :)
• victory is smth like a drug to her by that point ?? she craves the recognition and the admiration like oxygen, and not just in sports ! she strives for perfection in anything she sets her mind to. school ? she had the grades to get into one of the top universities in korea. sports? she’s one of the top athletes in the country.
• but ?? it’s not enough and lbr it won’t ever be enough

Haeun was born to two parents who had normal office jobs in Ilsan
until around the age of 10, when both her parents lost their jobs due to cuts in the company
unemployed and bordering on homelessness - her parents decided to take part in illegal businesses such as drug dealing and her mother become an escort.
this eventually led to them going into debt and becoming drug addicts
from a young age Haeun had always taken care of herself, and she was the one who reached out to social services, feeling no remorse for her parents.
It was this experience of her childhood which made her so obsessed with justice, she was willing to rat out her own parents because they’d crossed the line
right and wrong, in this regard, became an instrinsic part of her.
social services took her in - she was put with a foster family and eventually they adopted her.
>Haeun saw that it was the system that helped her, the system of order which made her life genuinely happy and she sought to keep the system in order however she could.
throughout school she was a class representative and later went on to a top-tier university studying criminal science. During this time at university, she became notorious for her investigative skills, even uncovering a murder which had been labelled a suicide.
It was this that made her stand out upon graduation and, after interning the previous few summers during university; she was selected as a detective in the police department.
Haeun is relatively new to the job, but this does not mean she has not already proved herself and she almost always works overtime.
PERSONALITY:
Kind to everyone but always suspicious, the type of person who is always watching and making judgements. She’s sociable when she’s not working, but often can appear distant and cold hearted to those who she sees as liars or even suspicious. Haeun is very good at understanding people, though she doesn’t particularly convey strong emotions, her logic is what makes her extremely intelligent. She will play the facade constantly to make you trust her only to betray you to the system - and will feel no regret about it.
If you don’t betray her trust and stay on her good side, she will be the best friend you could ever have. But if you’re someone who does illegal things or even misuses the system, she will stop at nothing to put you in jail.

theyre raised in whats basically one long, never ending military boot camp. theyre taught to use weaponry, how to survive on their own in any weather and situation, performing extractions. theyre basically a bunch of spy kids ok
during her middle school years, her mother disappears. its decided that its a direct consequence of her time as covert ops, and they are told nothing can be done in terms of saving her. almost every mission they went on doesnt exist
after her mother disappears, things get kind of iffy !! her dad and brothers get a lil. Wild. they react and theyre brash and theyre reckless n theyre testosterone x1000 and dohee learns Real Fast that men are fuckin AWFUL. situations at school teach her that women arent any better either. in fact, she just settled on ppl being shitty in general. all of em
they all graduate n get into the military. her brothers stay, dohee bows out of it. she decides she doesnt want to be a part of any of it; she wants to focus on what she does best, toxicology. plants and drugs and anything and their effects on the human body!!!!! she loves all of that !!!!!!!!
eventually, she becomes the guy ppl are talking about when they tell u they know a guy
shes multifaceted but establishes herself quickly as someone whos Damn good at what she does !!! her moral compass is pretty grey; she helps cops but she helps anyone else willing to pay her fees or trade her favors
shes still….. a very mistrustful person ?? its not as intense as it was when she was younger, shes seen the real world and knows the truths of it
but forming attachments for her is difficult. people Leave. people get hurt. people hurt you. people are never who they say they are

jinha’s mother was twenty - six, her father twenty - nine, by the time they tried to get pregnant. their first two pregnancies had ended in miscarriages. by the third pregnancy, they were stricken with paranoia. they were seeing specialists, had moved to the suburbs of the city and were praying day and night for their baby’s health. by the second trimester, the woman was beginning to feel sick, vomiting almost daily, unable to eat, and fatigue plagued her. her eyesight was the first to go, then her hearing came second. the woman was beginning to lose any real sense of reality, sure that her or her child would not survive through childbirth.
to the couple’s and every doctor’s surprise, it was a healthy birth. though she was petite, at a little over 6 pounds, she had no physical problems. her mother, though hard of hearing and sight, was as healthy as any normal delivery would allow.
the parents of this young child still could not believe that they had a child, and they vowed to keep her as safe as they could until they could no longer. she lived in a bubble from the moment she came home from the hospital. her childhood was nothing but loneliness and restrictions. she was not to go outside by herself, she could not go to any public facilities for fear that she would catch a disease, she was to eat all organic and by the time she was five she was on a vegan and gluten free diet. she was home - schooled and even the children on the block never wanted to play with her. they would often tease her and call her rapunzel, for she was trapped in that house and never let out.
at nine years old, she requested that her parents give her a sibling. her loneliness was beginning to get to her head. she still had imaginary friends at almost ten and spent most if not all of her time only reading books and her school work. jinha’s parents thought about it for almost a year before deciding against it, too proud of the perfect child that they had raised through thick and thin.
her only sanctuary was the one hour drive to her grandfather’s farm. ironically, it was the one place she actually felt safe and secure. for years, her grandfather taught her how to tend to crops, gardens, and animals. she spent hours in the barn, reading to her grandfather, as well as the chickens and horses, as he did his work.
by nineteen, jinha was given the choice to go to a local university. she would choose zoology as a major and continue to live at home, despite years of wanting to leave. she was not prepared to live by herself and she was terrified of the reality of university. to say the least, her parents were relieved at such.
two years later, she is asked to move to ilsan to work as a research assistant on the field for the university. and that’s where she is... living in ilsan on the dime of the university. she is their best student and best researcher in the field despite being so young and inexperienced. perhaps it comes naturally.
