Don't you remember?

”…I don’t.”
It was terrifying to not be able to remember anything at all, but that was the situation he found himself in when his eyes fluttered open and he found himself in an obnoxiously bright room in an unfamiliar place. A nurse had been kind enough to fill him in on where he was and what was known about his situation, but she seemed to know about as much as he did— which was nothing at all.
Now he had a visitor, and she was clearly someone he should have been able to recognize; but she may as well have been a total stranger. He felt guilty about it, even if it wasn’t his fault and the situation couldn’t be helped. Maybe he would wake up and realize that this was all a horrible dream; but the longer he spent in the hospital, his hope began to wane.
”I’m sorry.”
All feeling seemed to leave her body as the admission came forward. She could feel heart heart sink as he seemed visibly confused at her appearance there, at the way her hand held his so lightly, her expression filled with hope and concern. Now her expression fell, her hand slowly slipping away from his as her mouth grew dry, a pain blooming in her chest as she nodded and looked away, swallowing thickly. "Oh." She breathed, not able to look him in the eyes for a moment as she attempted to collect herself.
Her son, her flesh and blog, her light in life, looked at her as he would a stranger. After years of hardship, it was his beaming smile at her presence that lifted her spirits, now matter how dark times became. The thought of looking at him now only to be met with a blank stare brought tears to her eyes, but she fought them back. Finally, she willed herself to lift her gaze to his once more, a faint smile on her face. " It's alright, they said this might happen." Her voice was soft, gentle, but she hide her pain from him. " I'm your mother and you are my son. You have a brother, he's not here at the moment. Your father should be here soon. You've been in a terrible accident, but you should be alright."
