Renesmee had been wandering through the Cullen Library, volumes beyond volumes of classics and modern contemporary novels that both her mother and she bonded over. She was trying to place a new clothback copy of Wuthering Heights in the Bronte sister section the pair had created for themselves in the corner, but of course, she was being busted, by none other than her mother herself. “I wanted to surprise you.”

as edward sat at his lab table in his biology class, his thoughts were scrambled. who was this new girl? sure, he knew her name, that she moved from arizona, that she was the daughter of the police chief, but those were all things he could learn through listening in on other people’s conversations. he wanted to know who she really was, and why on earth he was incapable of reading her thoughts. as he stared intently at the board, trying to think of how this whole situation made sense, the thoughts of the blonde girl two rows in front of him caught his attention. there she is, isabella swan, i knew she would be in at least one of my classes. edward’s head snapped to the door and sure enough, there she was, the enigma.

“I know the last time me and Jasper looked after Renesmee she said a bad word but it was all Jasper, I promise.” Jaymes lied, a fake look of innocence plastered on his face. They both played a part in the role of bad uncle, but together the brothers were mischievous. It was hard to stop them. “Please let me look after her, I miss her, Bells.”

Edward missed many things from his human years. He missed the taste of his mom’s cooking, he missed not having to constantly worry about hunting and his blood intake, he missed being able to sleep at night. Although he would never be able to eat food or relax or sleep again, sitting with Bella while she slept was the closest thing to sleep he got to experience. He held her to his chest, listening to the steady beating of her heart, to the rhythm of her breath, to the whispered words that left her mouth every now and then. Watching her sleep, he could avoid thinking of the complexities of life for a moment and just focus on her. It was his favorite part of every day.
