i know you wrote a big page about this, but i'm still slightly confused. how is henry's personality different than the english? i'm writing a story {plus just want to know more about him} and want to know the difference. is he more serious in the japanese version? sincere? caring? i'm a bit confused how to write him, and as stated, i want to understand him more, considering he's one of my favorite characters. i'm just a bit confused on his personality differences.
Well, if you’ve read my Massive Writeup, those are pretty much all of the objective differences I’m aware of and can easily support with “this line in canon says so.” I don’t think there’s much else I can say on the matter without dipping heavily into matters of interpretation. It’s also really hard to try to answer these questions without basically being like “you should characterize him exactly like I characterize him!” because anything I say is necessarily filtered through my interpretation of him. :P (I wrote at length about my interpretation of his character back in 2013, but it’s really all “here’s my headcanon and here’s why I think this makes sense.”)
Regarding the specific examples you point out, I think that the game itself takes Henry more sincerely, to be sure. He feels more like a person with a past that’s shaped their world and led to them being as they are in the present, whereas he kind of reads like one gigantic joke in the English. I think in most of his interactions, Henry comes off as equally frivolous, but I think the difference is that he genuinely means the seemingly crazy things he says and that he has reasons why he says them.
