what butchfemme isn't: - a complicated, challenging dynamic - roles that need to be played perfectly with rules, constructs and strict methodology - formulas or styles of dress/fashion that can be 'right' or 'wrong' - sexuality or kinks that must be adhered to (i/e butch is always 'top') what butchfemme is: - safety. beginning in the 40's and 50's, butchfemme has always been about mutual protection and supporting of each other through the bending of gender norms (i urge everyone to read your history, however you can). - primarily lower socioeconomic people coming together to protect and support one another and love each other and engage in play, sex and kink. - fun! it's fun, people. it's always supposed to have been fun.
there has historically been far, far too much gatekeeping in the butchfemme community. as an example, butches in the 50's would ostracize any butch who wasn't stone. in the modern era there's just no need for it. we can make the change, we can choose to be better, and yet i see this online community engaging in a lot of the same soup reheated.
chivalry is my complete and utter weakness. holding my hand and guiding me through a crowd; gently pushing at others that are squeezing me in. good morning texts, good night texts, "I'll be gone for a bit, but I'll text you later" texts. holding doors open for me-- hand on the small of my back as I enter. pushing the grocery cart. fixing my hair. picking up my bag without question when I'm sore. leading in front in haunted houses and holding me during scary movies. "No, don't worry, I got it." "Talk to me, love; I'm here." "He said what to you? Ooh, I'll be right back." making sure I'm fed, making sure I feel okay. beacon of safety-- an unspoken you won't be harmed when I'm near.
Disabled butches are allowed to want to be protectors. Putting all disabled people into one category is counterproductive. Not all disabled people want to be viewed as weak. Equating being a protector to physical strength or ability is harmful. Being a protector is more than just the physical aspect. It can be shown through how you care for and comfort others, how you show love to your community, through your advocacy, and how you provide guidance. Being caring and vulnerable are traits of a true protector, too. Being a protector means understanding that physical violence isn't always the answer. This is why a lot of people fall flat and fail to protect others.
Someone needs to address the big elephant in the room and saying that the amount of posts regarding butches being basically sugar daddies to femmes is quite weird. First of all our culture stems from working class women, the first femmes were strong and Independent women, most of the time they were the one paying for their butches, because they were unemployed due to how they present themselves. Now, things have changed quite a lot, and mind you I loooooove spoiling my femme, from big gifts to little simple things, however! This comes from within me, it's my desire, not an imposition. I'm pretty sure most butches want to do that, even in the past, that chivalrous attitude inside of us you know. However, it is not required and it's not something you should expect from us by default. I saw a lot of young butches struggling with this, or struggling with the fact of not being "strong enough", having a weaker physique or for not having the right amount of finances to support their femmes and this is crazy! There's no such thing as a right way of being butch, and if there's one, surely it's not being forced into the financial caretaker role. You're entitled to your own weaknesses in your relationship, whether being them psychological, physical or economical, you're not less of a butch bc of this
i love when a butch just casually starts touching your lips, then fingering your mouth.. or when they put their fingers or thumb in your mouth to suck when you're just cuddling or watching a movie or something... that casual dominance >>>
a femme who’s not afraid to call me her boyfriend/husband. or use my he/him pronouns. a femme who isn’t afraid of my hypermasculinity and calls me handsome. someone who makes me feel comfortable being the butch boy that i am. my femme <3
