The rise of discourse about trans mascs/trans men in the lesbian community has me realizing something.

So many of ya'll hate heteronormative standards, but are all too comfortable upholding cisnormativity. I'm fucking tired of people saying "maybe I'm not woke enough for this..." instead of trying to understand queer people's unique perspectives on gender and its relation to sexual identity labels.

Here's my take: Gender is complex and is defined differently by everybody. Womanhood and being socialized as a girl can be notoriously traumatizing due to the sexism ingrained into our society (especially when we're taught from such a young age that we will always be victimized and abused for being women). As such, when someone transitions to a masculine identity, those experiences don't suddenly go away.

And no, you're not "invalidating yourself" by saying you're a lesbian if you're a trans man. You're exhibiting a unique combination of female socialization and male gender identity. And you're not invalidating other trans men, either, because you're not forcing them to use the lesbian label.

Stop pushing queer people into boxes!!! Especially when the lesbian community is known for its gender-nonconformity and trans identities (butches and studs, for example, many of which are transmasc).

I could also talk about how this corresponds with a rise of fascism and conservative values, and that by pushing queer people down you are only contributing to homophobic mentalities, but you CLEARLY aren't ready for that.

When I say that transmasculine people, including, obviously, binary trans men, don't hold power over women, there's always ONE fucker who's like "oh yeah ? But what if it's a whit, able-bodied perisex transhet man who's papers are all changed, who cispasses and is totally stealth AND is a manager ??? What then ???"

And I'm like, you CAN'T be in good faith rn. I'm not saying this particular case doesn't exist but be for real, it must be one in a fucking million. And even in this case, the dude is one outing away from having all his privileges taken away from him, which isn't the case for cis white men.

i think it’s weird to say that skinny shaming is “just as toxic and harmful” as fat shaming. like yes all body shaming is harmful, but you can bring up your experiences without comparing it to fat people’s systemic oppression.

right. like skinny people aren't systemically oppressed. My pots wasn't diagnosed for YEARS because every single doctor just thought I needed to eat more. I can't eat at a normal schedule because I can't eat much in one sitting, and when I was in middle school they wouldn't allow me to eat during class. (this led to low blood sugar, fainting, and lasting damage to my perception of hunger cues. I don't have hunger cues besides pain anymore.) I can't take ADHD medication because I will lose too much weight, if I don't force down protein bars or shakes. (Gagging on them the whole time, might I add, due to my ARFID.) Not to mention the comments of needing to eat more. I'm transmasc, so I'll never be perceived as anything but a twink (even when I go on T) even though it makes me incredibly dysphoric.

And if my metabolism goes the way my mom's did, I'm going to have to completely U-turn my eating habits to not gain too much weight.

I’m sorry you’ve faced so much hardship. Your experience is valid and sounds very difficult.

However, I think that it's ignorant and honestly disrespectful to insinuate that skinny shaming is the same or just as harmful as fat shaming and fatphobia. Body shaming is harmful to everyone on a personal level, but it does not impact all bodies equally. Thinness is still the western beauty standard. Thinness is associated with discipline, beauty, and success while fatness is equated to laziness, failure, and lack of control. Fat people not only experince personal ridicule but also systemic oppression deeply rooted in racism and patriarchy. They are told that we should starve ourselves. Most fat people will struggle with EDs in their lifetime and will be praised for it rather than recieve adaquate help. They are dehumanized, denied respect, and socially ostracized. They can't even walk into a store and find clothing that will fit. People will disguise hate for fat people as caring about our health all while fat people continue to be medically neglected. Most if not all fat people face consistent patterns of missed/delayed diagnoses and misattributed symptoms. Fat people's harsh reality goes beyond comments on how much they should eat. They are told they are undeserving of love and that’s not even all of it. You can talk about your experience without equating it to systemic fatphobia because there really is no comparison.

Individual instances of medical neglect/bias, transphobia, and ableism (intersections of other marginalized identities) are valid but it does not equate to the literal systemic oppression of fat bodies just on the basis that they’re fat.

Fatphobia is institutional, not just individual. All areas of society are built to work against fat bodies: social norms, workplace, healthcare, fashion, public spaces. To even suggest that skinny people are systemically oppressed is wildly incorrect.

P.S. Even in your post you mention still not wanting to gain too much weight. Let’s think about what that says. At the end of the day, most people fear being fat.
