Heresy. That’s what they’re hanging for. Not for being part of the Resistance because officially, there is no resistance. Not for helping people escape because officially, there is no such thing as escape. They hang for being heretics, not martyrs. Martyrs inspire. Heretics are just stupid. Was I being stupid?
RE: The Handmaid's Tale. I always thought it was a shame they never returned to the 'Handmaids being trafficked to Mexico for goods, money, etc' S1 storyline. I hope they do because it is an interesting idea.
Even by Gilead's standards, it's a new low. The look of mortification on Aunt Lydia's face said it all. She knows she's basically a slave trader now.
But as terrible as it is, you have to think: Um, wouldn't a handmaid be better off in Mexico or Europe? (Alma implies Gilead wants to take the scheme to other countries).
You have to think they'd be less strict and more liberal in their treatment of you.
At the very least, you'd be provided with a better shot at escaping. Not as much security. Easier to get out.
IMO, they should try that storyline in S3, maybe with Alma, who's never been given much to do as a character anyway. Or Dolores?
Or even Janine. (Janine trying to fit in in Mexico would be worth a Hulu account alone, ffs.)
I would like to be without shame.
I would like to be shameless.
I would like to be ignorant.
Then I would not know how ignorant I was.
There was an Offred before me. She helped me find my way out. She’s dead. She’s alive. She is me. We are Handmaids. Nolite te bastardes carborundorum, bitches.
Such spoiled girls you are. Such spoiled brats. He has given you everything, but when he asks you for your faith, you refuse.
