The watery hospital-brand coffee on the end table was older than the little girl, yet she already had him under her spell. Sonia's beckon drew him closer, but his attention remained. It was still unreal. All those months and hours by Sonia's side (during which he may have been more annoying than intended, but he couldn't help it; every little thing had fed his anxieties) and now the moment had finally come.

Oliver laid a long kiss atop Sonia's head. Sure, she was a little rough. But she had just spent over half the day bringing a person into the world. Besides. She was his wife. His best friend. The girl he had loved since they were children. And now they had a child of their own. It was crazy to think about. It was actually happening. Now.

The waiting area had been full when he had gone out to announce her birth. Their embracing, back-patting families and friends with their all-at-once, rapid-fire questions. The corner chairs piled with pink bears and flowers and balloons. They'd all come in to meet her soon. Oliver knew they'd fall in love her as instantly as he had. How could they not? But for now—for as long as possible—he was going to enjoy the brand-new family of three's first quiet little moments together.

Oliver crouched to gently caress her cheek with his thumb. A real, living person, just for them.
