Movies lie about nightmares.
The tossing and turning, the “no, no, no”s in your sleep, the waking with a strangled scream on your lips...none of it is true.
Claire still sees the blood, of course. She sees the carnage and the half-open dead eyes of her nephews and Karen screaming it’s your fault, it’s your fault. But she doesn’t toss and turn. There is no “no, no, no”. She doesn’t even gasp awake, let alone scream.
She simply opens her eyes.
Her alarm clock says that it’s only midnight, but then she realizes that it’s blinking and remembers that she never reset it after she threw it across the room yesterday morning when it blared in her ear an hour after she’d drifted off. According to her phone, it’s just after 2.
She can see the spare room door open just across from her and she doesn’t really know what she’s doing, leaving the warmth of her bed to cross the hallway, to step into the empty doorway.
If he wakes and asks, she’s simply checking on him.
