Determining OOIP and OGIP in a Reservoir

For nearly 15 years, Ivor Ellul and Knowledge Reservoir have researched and investigated numerous factors related to the potential for prospective oil and gas extractions worldwide. The company’s published studies frequently incorporate its findings regarding the original oil in-place (OOIP) and the original gas in-place (OGIP) of a reservoir. OOIP and OGIP refer to how much hydrocarbon is present in a reservoir before any recovery efforts have been made, and can be used to determine how much oil or gas can potentially be extracted. There are several applications of the terms, depending on the methods used to determine the original volume of gas and oil present in the reservoir. The reliability of OOIP and OGIP estimates in predicting the recovery of oil or gas is variable, and largely dependent upon models created to describe the reservoir itself. In a study conducted on the Miocene Reservoir in the Gulf of Mexico, Knowledge Reservoir developed a geological model of the reserve, providing deeper insight into the relationship between the extraction and the reservoir's OOIP and OGIP.
