Love when a character is afraid of losing things, but has to be subtle about it

“I’ve—the Weapon has killed people,” telepathic (canine) Living Weapon says. Doesn’t look at Caretaker. “The Weapon has tortured people. The Weapon knows exactly what someone’s mind looks like when it’s about to break, the Weapon knows how to make a death painful, and the Weapon knows how to track down escapees.”

Yeah it’s about Shale again: telepathic (living weapon) Whumpee + Caretaker who is immune to magic

Whumpee has never encountered a mental shield it couldn’t shatter. But Caretaker… Whumpee cannot sense Caretaker’s intentions. At all. It has to rely on words and body language.

Everyone has hidden feeling-words under their real words, but Caretaker…. Caretaker doesn’t seem to have them. Caretaker’s shields are invisible.

Whumpee doesn’t know what to do.

Bonus: Caretaker mentions they’ve heard mental shields hurt when they’re cracked, because Whumpee needs to learn how to telepath without hurting people, and Whumpee is horrified. They heard. Not experienced, heard. How powerful is Caretaker? Whumpee hasn’t had its shields crack, but it can’t even put a dent in Caretaker’s. Caretaker could probably shatter its shields without any effort at all. No wonder they’re its new handler
