Arthur really could not have endured it if Merlin died in his arms. He would become dilapidated seeing him die.
Merlin was so desperate and determined that he had a soul way stronger than Arthur. That way he would stand waiting for so long for his king to return.
I don't think Arthur could have done it. He needed Merlin to much for him to loose him. Merlin was a fighter and he did things for Arthur. Waiting endlessly is also something he does for Arthur.
