“You believed you were unable to love?”
“I had an easy time understanding people, but as you know, being around them was all the more unpleasant. I didn’t enjoy anyone’s company. I believed that I should love. But I never quite managed.” Will paused. Hannibal could hear in the way he was breathing that he had something else to say, so he stayed quiet. “Then, when I knew I shouldn’t love, when I knew it made the least sense, it came as easy to me as breathing, like the only path through a thicket, like the only way from a cliff to the ocean is down.”
“Was it a relief?”
“A horror, a thrill. A relief? That too, yes."
