i am rewatching the Lord of the Rings and this question popped up in mind:

If, for any reason, Morgoth had to choose one between Mairon and Lelca, say sacrifice one to save the other or simply make a choice, what will he do?

We've readily established throughout the story that Morgoth is as selfish as one can be, but what will he do when he is forced by powers beyond his own, say by Ungoliant or Eru?

Oh gods this is *the* question.

The real draw Melkor had to Lelyacalë was the light she possesses, and whilst he grew fond of her as a person, his and Mairon’s relationship is different. It was built on mutual admiration. Mairon was never a “thing”, an object.

In my mind, the physical and metaphysical bond he has with Lelca means he would feel compelled to save her. He would hate losing Mairon though and so resent the whole debacle, including Lelyacalë. So he would in effect lose both.

Likewise, if he chose Mairon and lost Lelca. I think no matter who he chose he would actually lose both.

I also think Lelyacalë wouldn’t let him make that choice. She would sacrifice herself. She sees the relationship between Melkor and Mairon more clearly than Melkor does and she’s not afraid of death, or of being without Melkor. She knows Mairon’s soul would break at the separation from Melkor, as we see in the penultimate chapter.

But yes. Let’s hope that decision is never put to Melkor.

imm backk and i have another random question: did glaurung miss lelca by any chance, considering he was akin a pet? to her and she spent many hours with him and she also taught him language? I remember Melkor calling lelca as mother of dragons fondly so i sometimes imagine glaurung as a huge lazy (deadly) cat who likes to purr and nuzzle only lelca.

Heyyy! Sorry I still haven’t answered your other ask, I’ve been thinking about it a lot and I’m still struggling to come up with anything yet but I can answer this one!

Glaurung did wonder where she had gone to begin with, but once he was unleashed upon the world he was more focussed on his own drama and evil doing to focus on her absence anymore. I think if she had come across him in the world, he would have been like a sulky teenager and tried his luck to see where he stood. I think remembering her kindness and softness in his upbringing would make him feel uncomfortable actually because it jarred with who he had become and the cruelty he was spreading.

But yes, when he was a baby dragon he would curl up in Lelca’s lap and eat out of her hand and sigh little smoky dragon sighs when she held him. He would look behind him to see if she was watching him do a new trick or skill as he got older. He would seek her out in a room to nuzzle against her side.

But he grew up and spent most of his time without her and he is a sentient being capable of speech so he no longer qualifies as a pet in that regard anymore and I think that would be very apparent should they have met again before his death.

Just a quick ques before i retire for the night: how would the interaction between lelca and smaug play out considering melkor literally called her the mother of dragons since she was the sorta foster mom of glarung?

Anyhoo… I’m not sure when Smaug was created or much of his backstory, but I think Lelca would not have been around when he was born and doing his thing and so because neither knew one another, Smaug would probably try kill and eat her and she would show him he can’t. His fire would have little effect on her she could just burn him enough to cause him pain with her own light that eating her would be out of the question.

In the end I reckon they would go their separate ways with begrudging respect but no love. It would have been an unpleasant experience for them both. Glaurung was an exception as she was there for his creation/birth and helped him grow in the beginning.

this is more like a ramble than an ask but ive been thinking about the relationship between mairon and lelca in the beginning.

For some reason, i believe in the beginning mairon might've been inclined to make something for lelca despite his hatred for her. It's from these three incidents such came to mg mind:

When mairon was praised by lelca for making the helmet back in almaren? (Im not sure of the name of the place where the ainur lived) and he visibly fluffled up like a peacock. He checked to see if she was lying so it might suggest hes been lied to before, being Aule's greatest student and his temperament and all, not everyone would want to be a critic. He knows she's got good aesthetic.

I don't think Mairon has actually ever truly praised another's craft (one whom he considers as an inferior being). He knows already lelca struggles with learning as fast and at the level of even a maia so her making something that mairon praises is a big deal in itself. Kinea like lelca knew theres a chance ulmo will reject the gift but still she went ahead and gave it her all.

The last incident is the time mairon steals lelca to meet melkor in angband and they huddle together near the throne while melkor destroys the two lamps. He's seen lelca's light, her fragility and tenacity and he, even for a few moments, had acknowledged it. He understood why melkor wanted her.

I think he might've been plagued with inspiration, lelca turning into a sort of muse for him, one he wishes was rather dead or better yet suffering. As per me, he might make her a simple dagger (simple as mairon can get), one that reflects all she is and all he has sensed within her.

On another note, i also feel like he may have secretly left the bracelt lelca made dor ulmo somewhere ulmo can find. An unanticipated act of courtesy to her and appreciation for craft. How he did i dont know but that guy is nothinf if not crafty.

Mairon does in fact make Lelca something - her own suit of armour! He’s very reticent to do so at first as he’s commanded to by Melkor but then when Melks is serving time in Valinor he uses it as a truce gift. That dagger you’ve attached would match her armour aesthetic perfectly and I’m now retconning it as part of what Mairon makes her 😅

I do believe he saw her as a muse, even if on the whole he will forever despise her. Enemies can inspire too though I guess!

I think Mairon only praised Lelca’s bracelet in an attempt to befriend her. It was all manipulation. Flattery and all that. I don’t believe it was a truly genuine comment, though he saw enough to know what to say. I think Lelca knew Ulmo would think it cute, the way a parent thinks a pasta necklace made from a child is cute 😂

Oooh yes, I now think Mairon secretly yeeted it into the lake of Almaren as he escorted Lelca off the island for Ulmo to find there.

heyyy, my final end terms are happening so im popping in quick to leave a small ques for u: what are your thoughts on ungoliant? And lets say if it ever comes down to lelca vs ungoliant, how will that play out, considering we already know lelca can her the spider but the spider is (was atleast at that moment) overwhelming more powerful than lelca.

Oooh, another brilliant question that I had asked myself at the time of writing that chapter. Ungoliant is a primordial entity that Tolkien didn’t really expound too much upon. Where did she really come from? What exactly was she? No one really knows. I personally believe she exists outside of what Eru created and is the antithesis to the flame imperishable. I headcanon that she came down to Arda once she saw all that had been created, almost like a moth to a flame. I think consuming what was created and choosing a spider form changed her from what she had been before. Melkor did scare her at one time and she’s also fearful of Manwë and Varda, so she can feel fear, but it’s her hunger that defines her, it’s her driving force.

After a good bit of thinking, I believe there are a few possible outcomes for the 1v1 scenario (potential spoilers for my fanfic under the cut).

Either Ungoliant would physically consume Lelca and then she would be trapped inside the dark and what happened to her in the dungeon after Melkor threw her in there for 300 years would happen again; she wouldn’t die but barely exist until freed/rescued.

They are in a stalemate in which Lelca is constantly feeding her light to Ungoliant who is constantly consuming it. Lelca would in turn need to consume light from life around her to maintain her own output and would in effect become a conduit.

Following on from the previous scenario: in this way, Ungoliant would eat everything via Lelca and be left with no choice but to consume herself when nothing else remained as she does in canon. Probably after she’s eaten Lelca as well, but then Lelca would survive because she has no other choice, the flame imperishable won’t let her die because it is her and it cannot perish.

Lelca would feed Ungoliant so much light that the great spider would be over-indulged and either go into a food-coma which would last for a long time and Lelca could escape or try to destroy her by other means, or Ungoliant would burst with engorgement and die that way.

On the note of the last song, i found this song that i feel resonates with the love story of lelyacale and melkor (yeah like the love story of beren and luthien😆)

on the same side note, you think either of melkor or adar will be simp enough to write songs or create something in the image of lelca?

Melkor is definitely not simp enough. He’s made her jewellery so that’s as far as it goes. Adar, maybe. But truth be told, the only real simp is Mairon for Melkor. Morgoth statue and cult in Numenor, anyone?

May i ask melkor's thoughts on this song; imagine he heard lelca singing this song and asks her what it means so she says its basically all the conditions a woman looks for in her future husband and if he can't fulfil it he ain't fit to be her husband. Like she says in her world its the gold standard for men😂😅

I am CACKLING at the thought of Melkor ever hearing this song. Oh my days 😂😂😂

Crack incoming. He would be wholly baffled at first. “What music is this??” Then once he got down to the lyrics he would scoff and say humans are strange creatures.

He wouldn’t mention it again for months then randomly blurt out: “I made you a necklace and a crown, does that count?” And then it would be Lelca’s turn to be baffled.

Her explaining what a date is to him would also be peak comedy. “Netflix and chill… this is like when I show thee a dragon fight and we end up laying together instead?” “Sure, Melkor, it’s totally the same.”

He’d ask what groceries were. Anniversaries too, as whilst they are celebrated in Arda, Melkor has never bothered with them as time is a bit inconsequential to him and he doesn’t have a birthday per se and time was measured differently before the sun arrived.

His biggest hang up would be the bit about him apologising after every fight and admitting the woman in the relationship was never wrong. Completely alien concept to him for any one, not just Lelca. Not a chance in hell he’s doing this one 😂

if you could transport melkor and saratalma (seperately) into leah's body on earth for one day/moment/memory, which one instance would you as the author want them to experience? With talma and his love for music (and newfound love for sun), i think a beach moment might do him some good, like a concert or simply playing around the an italian wineyard near the sea with music in the bg as he walks through it enjoying the sun (even tho he's afraid of ulmo). Something like this for talma.

So sorry I’m answering this one so late 🙈 what a fun question! The beach would be a good idea for Talma… except he’s terrified of all bodies of water, especially the sea. Even if he knew Ulmo wasn’t there, he just hates water in general 😅 buuuuut definitely somewhere sunny and with his newfound love of gardening, I think a vineyard would be his vibe.

I think for Sàratalma, it would be the time Leah had a picnic with her parents in the countryside of Dumfries in Scotland. It was a gloriously sunny day and they took a speaker to play music and picked wildflowers to take back home. A memory like that I think. Or the first time she used a gun, as Talma would loooove that experience for sure 😂

For Melkor, I’m not sure. As the author… maybe show him a time Leah did something fun and emotionally bonding with her brother so he can see what a healthy sibling relationship looks like. Or a time she participated in a creative activity with someone else so he could see that collaboration is good and not everything has to be a competition. I think I would want to use Leah’s memories in an effort to teach Melkor, though whether he would learn anything, or learn what I would like him to learn, would probably not happen 😅
