Trinidad Carnival is around the corner (Feb 16th 17th) and these are my top 5 Soca songs leading up to it. If, like me, you can’t attend you can always have yourself a mini carnival (which is what we’ll be doing on the 7th)
How We Roll - Saffire
Melancholy-tinged soca songs are often my favourite and I would say this is the best of the year.
We Pumpin’ - Shurwayne Winchester
This one embodies a kind of pre-bacchanal grandiosity I like very much. The lyrics can also take on rather a different meaning depending on how you define ‘pumping’.
Dirty Dirty - Skinny Banton
This year’s dutty mas jab jab anthem with a great singalong chorus.
Ola - Olatunji
Kan Kan is easily the riddim of the season and Olatunji kills it using his own name as the hook (and why not?)
Pankatang - Biggie Irie
Best lyrics - Biggie tells us he would sacrifice his house and land for soca, which is no small statement as his place looks pretty swish in this video.
