Here is my letter which I wrote very quickly, so it’s not the best but it gets the point across!

Dear [“Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss (name)”, or “Minister” for cabinet ministers],

I am writing to ask for your support in making it clear Canada will continue welcoming Syrian refugees, including those turned away from the United States of America. As your constituent and a first-generation immigrant, I am disheartened by the racist, anti-refugee policies enacted this week by our neighbours to the south. I know fellow Vancouverites who are sponsoring newly arrived refugees, and it pains me to know that there are refugees who have worked so hard to reach North America who are being turned away because they arrived in the USA rather than our country.

It would be a strong signal and a welcome move if, in response to our neighbour’s tightening of their border, for us to open ours even wider by continuing to support the arrival of refugees from Syria and elsewhere into Canada. Furthermore, as the USA is no longer a country that welcomes refugees, Canada should delist the USA as a Safe Third Country, so that refugees who are not welcome by the our neighbours can be welcomed here.

THANK YOU OMG i’m still just really ekfjdilgjr!!! about it. There had been an opportunity for this at the end of the course, and my group (myself included, of course) failed to come through with the required revisions in time. I was honestly really disappointed about having lost such a great opportunity.

I recently reached out to the prof and he mentioned that he and the journal’s editor were both still interested in publishing, and we got everyone in gear to get it done so that it could be in this issue. tbh I’m really overwhelmed right now and mostly trying not to cry happy/proud tears lol.
