Trumpet In the Land

I worked there for one summer, and it was the greatest experience of my life (aside from driving through the Taco Bell drive thru at 2 am for dinner)

If you don’t know what it is, Trumpet is this outdoor theatre, named after the play, that chronicles the true events of Natives versus the white settlers in Gnadenhutten, and the stage is located in the exact hills where this all played out. And the best part is: You know who’s portrayed as the “savages?” The white settlers! It’s quite refreshing.

I played a Native American convert. And, because of my Native heritage, I didn’t even have to wear a wig or anything. They just braided my hair and put on some TD and sent me on my way.

Trumpet isn’t just another random theater, though. The plays (Trumpet in the Land, White Savage) were written exclusively by Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Paul Green exclusively for this theatre. People travel from all over to act in it. It’s very prestigious, and I was so lucky to be in it. (You know that woman who plays the mom on American Housewife? Well, she acted there for a summer too, and apparently is not a very nice person.)

There’s a rehearsal or performance every single night in the summer. It’s a gigantic commitment, but totally worth it. Although by the time I was out of costume and makeup, it was nearly 2 am, so you know. That’s the only thing you can do.

After my stint in the Trumpet play, I played the part of a vampire in Dracula. That was frickin awesome. The makeup artists were very talented. I looked dead but kinda sexy as well, what with the eyeliner and this darkred lipstick. The teeth hurt my gums, but what are you gonna do?

Then I was tuckered out. After that, I’d just sell commemorative programs to people as they entered. But that place will always be one kf my favorite places on Earth.

(I was murdered in Trumpet, and one time this little girl started crying when I died.

It went like this: In the middle of the raid, I ran ti the very front of the stage, knelt down, and started praying. Then this white guy came and smacked me in the head with the butt of his gun. He didn’t actually hit me, and I had to act like I was jerking my head back and falling to the ground, dead. Then I just lied there at the front of the stage for the remaining ten minutes of the scene. I was facing away from the audience and just watching everyone else running around and watched the church prop burn. It was fun. I learned how to make it look like I wasn’t breathing because I was close to the audience and there was a spotlight on me for a bit.

That’s when that girl started crying. I guess she just really liked my spunky character.)
