I have a hypothesis that careers associated with substance abuse are not risk factors in themselves, they're just jobs you won't lose the day you start drinking too much. Since you can still write or practice bass while fucked up, well past the point where it would torpedo your career as an accountant or a construction worker, and even past the point where you already ruined your life. Then it does become a risk factor because all your coworkers are killing themselves too.
