Sharp green eyes rest on Kirk, resentful and possibly murderous.

"I did not get dunked on," Flint growls. "Those toddlers were uncouth and misbehaved. And... uncannily observant." He glares, jaw flexing as he tries not to say those kids were little assholes. They were children, for Christ's sake.

"I did notice you didn't stop them. I don't appreciate being called a ginger bitch by a two year old, and you could have intervened."

“depends on how cheesy we’re talking.” dark eyes flash with amusement as she looks at kirk over the rim of her glass, the bourbon a deep amber in the soft bar lighting. she’s seen him around campus, of course, and knew his reputation was a mile long among the ladies. but she’s curious, and isn’t that always the way.

curiosity killed the cat, after all; very few know that satisfaction brought it back.

and maybe, just maybe, there’s an itch she’d like to have scratched, but only if he plays his cards right. 

“why don’t you go ahead and give it a shot, and i’ll give you a rating. hit a ten, and i’ll let you buy me a drink.”

Except that he was. Starfleet goddamn Captain and he still got his face beat in with the rest of them. What was it about him that just pissed off aliens? Diplomacy shouldn't be this hard, and he had a feeling his higher-ups were going to agree.

A snack actually didn't sound like a bad idea right now. Or a drink.

He released a sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I'm fine. How close are we to Altair IV, Mr. Chekov?"

The usual playfulness to the captain’s tone is lacking. Kirk is fond of livening up the bridge with a smile or a joke when the moment allows it, but there is an edge to his voice one would have to be asleep to miss. His answers are curt, sharp like a jagged piece of metal. "You are, Captain. Your orders today have been a little more—”

He glances at Sulu as if the word he’s currently looking for will materialise on his friend’s forehead. Sulu simply shakes his head, pretends he isn’t smirking to himself, as if to say don’t drag me into this, Pav, and Pavel never does find the word he’s looking for in the end, so he improvises. “Your tone gives it away. Is this about the conference?”

It did not go well.

His fingers fly at his console with the grace and precision of a pianist and his answer comes within the span of a breath. “At our current speed, two hours and twelve minutes until we arrive at Altair IV, sir.”

     She blew out a breath, ruffling the strands of loose hair that framed her face. If there was one thing CJ couldn’t stand when it came to others flirting with her, it was when she wasn't in the mood to flirt back. Couldn’t he see she was busy here? Literally up to her elbows in grease, her focus was on fixing this damned engine. And she didn’t exactly look her best either, with her hair in a messy bun and dirt smeared on her brow. She figured his flirting was just superficial flattery. No way in hell could he be genuine and that just… pissed her off.

     Her socket wrench clattered as it slipped out of her hand and, further annoyed, CJ turned her glare to him. “You already lost, pal. Just… tell me what you want already and stop playin’ around.”
