Milton Avery’s ‘Female Painter’, 1945

This Field Work Term, I’m working at the Bennington Museum on a couple of projects including a Milton Avery exhibition! The above painting will not be included in the show but I chose it because I think it encapsulates another reason why I am on campus this winter: to paint! 

I am currently experimenting with a totally different palette and it’s been leading to some interesting insights. For me, I find it a lot easier to start with bizarre colors because it helps me to keep the ‘what the heck am I doings?’ to a minimum. In the past, when I’ve worked with ‘pleasing’ colors, I end up restricting myself too much. Essentially, when I stop having fun, it shows. It was a great lesson that I learned (and am still learning) that you can have intention, focus, and determination in your work without taking yourself too seriously. I feel like Milton really gets that.
