Today’s #filmfriday is a hidden gem! Directed by Avery Crounse, Eyes of Fire (1983) is a folk horror tale set in the Appalachian wilderness, they even mention the Allegheny River! As a life-long western PA native, I got excited. It is clear this film may have been an inspiration to later horror flicks, chiefly The Witch, for it is set in 1750 colonial America and follows a small group of outcast pioneers as they attempt to settle in a woodland area that they soon find out is home to a devil-witch. One pioneer, Leah, is perceived to be insane but she is most aware of the impending doom and it is a treat to see her storyline unfold. As a low-budget film, Eyes of Fire certainly has some flaws but the intriguing plot and creative effects combine to deliver a movie that is atmospheric, suspenseful, and chilling. One character mentions how the forces of evil are not below in hell, but here among us on earth, and this concept weaves a genuine thread of terror into the primitive, isolated setting. I absolutely loved how this film went about portraying the evil forces as a part of the land, ancient-like in presence and ingrained in the local superstitions. The witch has a particularly frightening aesthetic as a monstrous demon, and her humanoid cohorts will have you looking over your shoulder next time you take a lone walk in the woods. I enjoyed every second of this movie down to the very fitting ending.
