Music Roundup: April 5—11

I'm starting a new series! Music is my lifeblood, and I wanted to have an outlet to share all of the incredible music that's out there in the world. My hopes with this series are that maybe you'll find a new song to add to your collection or artist to check out! And of course, feel free to send me any songs or albums you think I might like!

Without further ado...

The Neighbourhood - (((((ultraSOUND))))) Alternative rock

Ultrasound is a super interesting album. Or (((((ultraSOUND))))) I guess, but I don't even know where to start with pronouncing that.

Like most people, I first heard of them from their 2013 hit Sweater Weather, an infectious dark-pop tune that was stuck in my head for years before I finally rediscovered it earlier this year. The Neighbourhood continue this trend on their newest album, which combines alternative rock with indie pop. Despite the album having 15 tracks, every song is super distinct and catchy in its own way, and it has the same nonchalance and laid-back energy that made Sweater Weather so great. My personal favorites are OMG and Zombie.

oktobernatt - Rasa Rock

Sometimes, the YouTube algorithm strikes gold. This is the case with oktobernatt, a Berlin-based rock band of six members. Although the band has yet to reach their first anniversary, they're already putting out incredible music. And Rasa is seriously incredible. It starts with a subtle guitar riff and lead singer Gabriel Svedberg's haunting, powerful voice, but then it punches you right into the chorus, where the entire song bursts right open into a chilling symphony of guitars where Gabriel cries out about a controlling relationship she had to leave behind. The song is six minutes long, and it uses every single second of that forcefully and intentionally. Seriously, give Rasa a listen.

Mat Kerekes - Ruby Folk, soft rock

Mat Kerekes has quickly risen to be one of my favorite artists of all time. He's the lead vocalist of Citizen, a rock band who rose to prominence with their 2013 album Youth. While Citizen leans into emo, punk, and grunge, Mat's solo music is soft, intimate, and just as heartfelt. He has several great albums, Ruby being just one of them. He's not afraid to let his rock roots shine through, and on Ruby, he even brings in pianos, strings, and horns which makes the album a really interesting mix between a rock opera and an acoustic folk-ish album.

To me, his music feels like lying on my bedroom floor on a fall afternoon, home alone with the leaves rustling outside. It's a breath of fresh air in a world that just keeps spinning faster. Don't be surprised if I include more music of his in another one of these!

My personal favorites are Autumn Dress and Spider Silk.
