Oktyabr (October) (1927)
A recreation of the Russian revolution of 1917.
A staple feature in Eisenstein’s work is fast, striking editing. In this case it serves to depict surreal moments where time repeats and patterns change. There was a clear attempt to portray the events in a realistic manner with the perspective jumping from side to side and between numerous groups of people.
This wasn’t however the most effective way to explain the events since the result is a confusing montage of, at times seemingly unrelated, events. It also doesn’t help the narrative that many tedious and repetitive scenes where the sides have meetings to discuss proposed actions are included despite them all being similar and it being a dull way to move the plot forward, no matter how accurate.
There were some of the striking scenes this director is known for, mainly in the first half and most memorably the horse and bodies in the river. Another particularly notable thing that worked in favour of the film was that many of the scenes were recreated in the locations that they actually occurred which lends even greater accuracy and scale to the depicted events.
Lenin played a significant part in the history of the revolution, however in the film he’s negligible and wasn’t really prominent in the iconography of the film, almost merging into the crowd at times. Altogether it doesn’t work so well as propaganda or entertainment because there is little or no human connection and the emotions of the crowd are superficial at best so there is little for the audience to identify with.
2/10 -It’s not THE worst, that’s something else. But...-
-More people were reportedly injured recreating the storming of the Winter Palace than were injured in the real event.

We are pleased to announce the opening of Oktyabr, a skate shop concept by Brinkworth and the Wilson Brothers in collaboration with Gosha Rubchinskiy and the brand Rassvet. The designers and clients were introduced by Kixbox owner Philip Duchovny. When Gosha and the team met to discuss the brief, it was clear this was not to be just a lifestyle store; it was to be a skate store. A place for the skaters of Moscow and beyond, to gather, shop and socialise.
