But why is everyone equating the hood with black people? is that not in itself racist? black people arent the only ones that live in the hood?? the hood means a lower class area, he was talking about wealth it literally has nothing to do with race
Black people aren’t the only ones living in the hood in the US, but poverty rates are much higher for them than for white people.

In light of a few people on Tumblr accusing tøp of being racist, how do you feel about the issue? Is Tyler's representation of Blurryface with black paint problematic?
Ok, here’s my two cents:
Anti-blackness is GLOBAL. WORLDWIDE. EVERYWHERE. Nobody is exempt from it. We are all raised in a society that tells us that white is better, nicer and superior, and the darker you are, the worse it is. Everyone is raised within this concept. And so are twenty one pilots. (And btw, extremist/ far right racism is not the only racism that exists. The fact that tøp is not going around shouting the n-word or beating black people up, doesn’t mean that they’re not automatically racists)
I think what is causing all this drama rn in the clique is the line ‘I wasn’t raised in the hood, but I know a thing or two about pain and darkness’
Ok, now....
I get what Tyler is saying. Being raised in a middle class family doesn’t mean that your life is automatically perfect or free of any suffering whatsoever. We all know that he went through very difficult times, especially when he was younger, and I can definitely relate to what he’s saying. I wasn’t raised in the ‘hood’ either, but I definitely had and still having my struggles.
But I feel like with that verse Tyler was trying to delegitimize the struggles that people who live in the hood (poor african americans) face everyday, by equating his to theirs. White and class privilege are a real thing: Tyler, as a white american, will never go through what poor african americans face everyday (State violence, police brutality, food deserts, no health insurance etc...) so comparing his struggles to theirs is just wrong.
But the thing is, I don’t even think that Tyler is aware of that. From what I’ve seen on tumblr and on twitter, most white americans are absolutely clueless about what poor african americans go through.
I also think that the timing of this release is quite unfortunate, because of what is happening rn in Baltimore.

They were amazing, they put on a hell of a show!! If you’re going to the floor though, it’s gonna be very rough. The first time I saw them, I was 2nd row from the stage, and the crowd was pretty pushy. So I will advise you to go with somebody or to make friends with other people there.
