Blaze Foley: Oooh Love (Blue Eyes)
Not a lot of recordings of this around. I’m pretty sure this version is from the “Live At The Austin Outhouse” tape. Perfect.
The other day I was on my way to Man College when I swung by the Thundercloud on South Lamar near Manchaca. Now Thundercloud will eventually get an entry of its own here. But let me just say that being in that part of town, in a local sandwich shop run by some classic Austin types and full of a bunch of dudes in their sixties who looked like they just stumbled out of the We'll Never Stop Missing or Reminiscing About the Armadillo World Headquarters and We'll Never Stop Boring You to Death with These Stories Club-- well this great combination of circumstances made me so happy. It felt like Old Austin hasn't disappeared after all.
Whilst I was having a very pleasant, very unhurried chat with the nice guy making my sandwiches, he stopped and pointed out the window. There was a very old car with a very little dog perched across the top of the driver's seat. This immediately called to mind my soul dog, Bubbles, may she rest in peace, who loved to get up to the highest point of the tallest piece of furniture so that she could give the stink eye to all comers from a proper powerful vantage point.
I stepped outside to see if I could track the human who belonged to the dog. As you can see, I found him. Didn't catch his name, but he told me the dog is Jerry Lee and together they are know as The Pirates of Manchaca. (Technically I think Jerry Lee actually plays the role of parrot, but, whatever.)
Did my heart so good to stumble upon this whole scene. Helped me, if only for a few moments, forget about the traffic and block out all the fucking condos.
Thank you Jerry Lee and Your Human!
I <3 ATX!
