J. Cole, PARKER, and John Mayer
Last week was the first week I was able to get back into the groove of listening again. I'm listening to expand my knowledge of music, inside of Hip Hop and also slowly moving outside as well. I listened to 3 albums.
1. J. Cole - 2014 Forest Hills Drive
I really respect J. Cole as a rapper after listening to this album. Born Sinner wasn't as cohesive or powerful as 2014 Forest Hills Drive. I appreciated how Cole advocated love and unity in hip hop rather than rappers always wanting to put each other down and "dethrone" each other. It was refreshing to hear.
The production, songwriting, and delivery all sounded really great to me. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. I'll be following this dude more from now on.
2. Dumbfoundead/PARKER - Old Boy Jon
I wrote it like that because I'm pretty sure this album released before Dumbfoundead rebranded as PARKER. I really liked the way this album sounded. The mixing/mastering was really well done, I think. PARKER's voice sounds really crisp on every song.
I also enjoyed the content and production. Some lines seemed a little corny at times, but PARKER's playfulness on some of the songs is entertaining and unique. "Stereo Jack" was definitely something I've never heard before. The features were all great additions too. I enjoyed the album.
3. John Mayer - Paradise Valley
My first impression was... "Wow this is straight up Athens music." This is the sound that I think of when I think of Athens!! But anyways, this album did warm me up to this indie/alternative kind of sound (I'm not even sure that's an accurate description... please correct me if I'm totally off). I especially appreciated the songwriting; there's a kind of weight that this kind of sound adds to a song's message that's really unique to this genre. I think I enjoyed this album.
