An old chimney out in the woods, a pump, a foundation, but no house remains. It's pretty close to a suburban neighborhood, and somebody has taken the time and resources to haul a load of mulch out here, and paving stones for a path, cut wood for the fireplace, and a wreath and bow, to decorate it for Christmas. I don't know what they thought they were doing, but it warms my heart. Me, I think they were decorating for the ghosts. Looks like they even had a nice fire with them one night.

27 November - Rumbling in the Chimney

The men on the outside of the building heard a rumbling sound from inside the chimney. They were all hard at work on the new Commonwealth Edison company plant at Fisk and Twenty Second (now Carpenter and Cermak). Around the power plant was a 194 foot chimney that was the focus of their work.  The noise started at the top, and with clangs and deep, unsettling rumbles it moved steadily downwards, the outside of the chimney shaking a bit from the pressure on the inside.

A large thud marked the end of the horror, and silence took over the construction zone.  Bits of mortar trickled down, and for a few moments the workers worried that the chimney itself was about to fall down.  But everything seemed quiet, too quiet.  Someone called out, but no on else answered them.

Inside the chimney at the time was Frank Schuler, Luther McLaine, Hugo Olsen, and John Bensch.  They were standing on a metal scaffolding at the top, 188 feet up, inside the chimney. They had been preparing to put a metal ring on top of the chimney itself.  Other workers feared for the worst as they went to the base of the chimney to look up for them.

What they found was a twisted tangle of broken bodies, steel, and wood.  For whatever reason, the platform had fallen, taking the men down with it and bouncing between the sides of the chimney as it went down. Only John Bensch survived the fall, but after a few hours in the hospital he too passed away.
