Since Animal Farm is a hot topic recently due to a certain recent adaptation, here's the Creature Shop version of Old Major from the 1999 TV movie (who may have the most unintentionally hilarious death scene ever).

So the other day I saw this clip from an upcoming animated adaptation of Animal Farm and got pissed that a serious and mature book that was created as a political allegory is being turned into a children's comedy with celebrity voice actors. Napoleon is even being voiced by Seth Fucking Rogen. Yes, Napoleon, the character that's supposed to represent Stalin. Fucking Stalin,
It sucks because I honestly would've loved a new animated adaptation of Animal Farm, as long as its for adults and keeps the dark tone from start to finish. I do know there was an animated film adaptation in the 50s but even that wasn't a perfect adaptation since it changed the ending to a happier one where Napoleon and the other pigs get defeated, ruining the point of the book. An ideal adaptation would be a serious and dark animated film for adults that keeps the dark ending of the book.
Anyway since I'm fueled by spite it made me want to try drawing some of the characters from the book (or at least just the animal characters I could fit into one drawing lol).
Moebius (Jean Giraud 1938-2012) Old Major (undated) Source
I’m so confused right now.
(context: for school I’m doing a project on Animal Farm and how it connects to the Russian Revolution)
So in Animal Farm, Old Major is supposed to be the equivalent of Lenin, right?
But during his speech, he talks about his dream — which is basically a summary of the Communist Manifesto (animal style).
So… wouldn’t that make Old Major more like the embodiment of Karl Marx’s ideals? It’s straight-up Marxist theory — the dream of equality, of the workers (animals) rising up against their oppressors (humans).
And let’s not forget that during the Battle of the Cowshed (which should represent the February Revolution), Old Major has already passed away, while Lenin was still alive (in exile during the February Revolution, but alive and soon to return).
But then again, Animal Farm is a fairy tale, not a history book.
What am I missing? I know it’s something!
The character that haunts not only the narrative in their story, but also in the real world, more than any other is Old Major from Animal Farm and I will not be hearing disagreements.
Reread Animal Farm on our journey home. Forgot how wrecked I was when Boxer died and how annoyed I was that they didn't clarify what happened to Snowball.
The re-writing of history, the rampant abuse of power, and the 'perks' the pigs got starting with that damn milk. But Boxer, poor Boxer. Major would not have been happy with his species if he saw what they did.
Still a crazy good and thought provoking book.
my current mood is old major from the animated animal farm movie who is just so fuckiGN ChONkY and straight up dies in the first ten minutes of the film
My kids are getting restless. And as a result i’ve gotten back to work on the comic that is surely going to be the death of me. I’ve been busy and also a bit distracted thanks to my new friends and all and i apologize to my babies. I’ve been working on some promo art that i’ll share around here. Sit tight.
