Like any good noir series, there’d be a pretty gal for me to draw now and then. Especially since i liked the idea that bots can come in forms that boxy and inhuman to very sleek and pretty.

Like any good noir series, there’d be a pretty gal for me to draw now and then. Especially since i liked the idea that bots can come in forms that boxy and inhuman to very sleek and pretty.
I was doodling with shape and line tools in PS trying to sketch me one of the futurescapes in my comic that i keep working on for a billion years A.I.P.D.
When i was done it accidentally became some old school IBM Paul Rand/Saul Bass graphic design thing.
Funny.
Was experimenting a lot with different techniques and things. First off i utilized a frank miller trick (using light negatives in order to simulate darkness and contures in works with limited color palettes). Second, i got bolder with the limited color palette. Third, i’ve never done this before but i started using feathering which I see Jim Steranko, Wally Wood, and Darwyn Cooke do a lot in their works. I love how it turned out. And as always i’m trying to fuse that beautiful Francesco Francavilla inking style with a bit of the messiness of Alexis Ziritt.
All this work for a simple joke with poor Rev taking all that abuse.

For this sketch, i was really channeling in the feel of Frank Miller’s Ronin work trying to capture that sketchy gritty feel that came to the work. As well do that hatching technique in cyberpunk comics to create gradients. I wasn’t really trying to make something as polished as i usually do. It’s pretty ugly, which is exactly what i was going for.
A one off illustration i did while working on A.I.P.D. really wanted to do that sorta Alexis Ziritt/Francesco Francavilla kinda moody coloring. Make it real pulpy like some forgotten novel. I should really do more of these soon.

I bitch a lot about the comic, but i truly do feel grateful that it’s getting made. There’s no greater feeling than seeing something that only existed in your head finally jump into the real world.
I finally got a chance to add color to an art piece i’ve been dying to work on. One of the things that i’ve been worried about was how to distinguish night and day within a monochromatic comic. After awhile I settled on neon pink on purple against black. It ended up looking better than i expected!
Another recolor of an older piece for practice. Appropriate since it’s cold and snowy here now.
