Rob’s continuing thoughts about his own identity (or identities), which he enjoys titling in the third person
You all know I’m disabled, but most of you also know that I LOOK able-bodied most of the time--unless I’m having a “claw day” where my right hand and arm try to curl up like a T-Rex arm (and even then I can usually force it to look mostly normal to most casual observers), or on those days when I have to use my cane.
So like, considering all that, even though I feel like I’ve kept true to my punk/rock roots (sure, I look more like a lumberjack than a Sex Pistols fan these days now that my hair is no longer green and I’ve removed all my facial piercings, but so did the Replacements), I don’t feel like I should use the terms “cripple punk” or “cpunk” to refer to myself. Like, I feel like I’d be diluting the terms, you know? Almost (not quite, but ALMOST) like if a non-disabled person were to use them.
But I just think they are such cool, empowering terms.
Like, “Yeah, I’m disabled, and I rock just as fucking hard as you do. And anybody who thinks otherwise can eat my fucking ass!”
So I may not feel comfortable referring to myself that way because I’m not--to my mind--”disabled ENOUGH,” but I’m just so fucking proud of cripple punks everywhere for defying a society that expects all of us disabled folks to be something other. That expects us to be something less.
Because fuck those ableist assholes.
