Staying in old houses is the best. I’m not talking about old hotels and stuff like that, I’m talking about staying in that ancient summer home your family has or a friend let you stay in. They’re great.

You can go anywhere. The attic, the basement, the old servant quarters... You may risk getting your head full of spider webs, but all the rooms that haven’t been visited in years are free game. Climb all the stairs. Open all the doors. You don’t get that with hostels.

Most times, those rooms aren’t even empty. The books that belonged to someone no longer in this world are still there, just like their furniture, photo albums, notebooks, jewelry, and even clothes! See the pieces of the house’s history and put them together, even if nothing too interesting happened.

If you want some advice, check the drawers always. It’s there where the little trinkets have been for years. But remember, you can take them to get a closer look, but always put them back. I personally love to try reading those books I find. So many cookbooks, classic literature, and plant guides!

See the contrast between what’s been renovated and what’s still the same. You may find an old hoover next to some cleaning products with dubious end dates, as well as radios. fireplaces and phones. All of this next to beds bought last year and modern electronics. Also rats and bats.

Yeah, I may have disturbed a family of bats that were living in the old garden shed because I didn’t see them. Sorry.

On the other hand, dead moths and spiders proved to be great muses. They just gave me a solemn feeling when I drew them.

As a final piece of advice, bring a flashlight if the owner told you the electrical system hasn’t been renovated yet. It’s not worth it trying to go all ‘’mechanical engineer’’ on an electrical board with more than sixty years of existence. Trust me.

In the end, if the place has a garden, don’t forget to explore it. Are the trees recent or have been there for generations? Pick some fruit and flowers, if allowed. Appreciate the layout that may or may not gone out of fashion years ago. See the home from outside and try to see if there are windows from where you haven’t been yet. That’s how I found the servants quarters.
