Old Sailor making a Model Boat or For the Boy, 1883, by unknown
Perspective: Provided By A Random Encounter With An Old Sailor I woke up this morning to my son not feeling well and my daughter pinging off the walls. One of the other neighborhood parents and I loaded up all the neighborhood kids in the F350 drove then down the street to the school since its 38 and raining today.
I came home checked in on my son to make sure he was good and stepped out to get some fat pellets for chow. On the way out the door I took photos of our beautiful roses and jumped in the Jeep rather than the truck. I mean it, my life has privilege written all over it, of course all the hard work and sacrifice can't be seen in a superficial view from outside, it's ok I'm feeling good today.
I am in the Jeep warm and dry and on my way home with a hot bag of fat pellets when an old man walking in the rain and the cold stumbles, shifts to the side and his fall is only arrested by a street sign. I drove past......
I drove past against every fiber of my being yelling at me to stop. I did not get far, I drove the Jeep on to the sidewalk and out of the road and walked back to that old man to ask if I could help him, If I could give him a ride any place. At first he was skeptical and I would be to if I saw me walking at me, but when he realized I was really there to help I saw relief wash over his masked face. From his hat I could tell he was a Sailor and I thanked him for his service.
I asked if I could take his bag, told him where I was putting it and helped him in the Jeep. Apparently, my Jeep is not made for 87 year old Navy Veterans. The drive was not long to his house where he lives alone now. But we talked like two old Veteran's will do. I helped him out, gave him his bag and made sure he got inside safe all the while my heart was breaking. It was breaking because this good man had to walk in the cold and rain more than 2 miles to get a freaking gallon of milk. It was breaking because I'd bet a hundred cars drove by this man, who after a heart attack and a stroke could hardly walk, and no one stopped. It was breaking because I too was about to drive past him and not listen to the voices of my ancestors yelling at my to do the right thing. It was breaking because I was and am ashamed that for the first time in a very long time my first instinct was not to do the right thing first. I guess it's time for a little introspective looking and see where my path deviated.
Thank you Sir, from an old dusty Dog Face to an Old Salty Sailor, thank you for "Righting my Ship", I needed the course correction.
Old hand of unknown origin. Old photo... looks like 1880ies or so.
