In "Joe's Painted Past," this portrait captures the soul of Joe, my 1977 Philadelphia landlord. Every month, I would cross Pine Street to pay rent at his vintage antique store, a place overflowing with old furniture and nostalgia. Because I had spent the summer of 1971 learning Italian in Sicily, we connected instantly. We would sit together, and he would share captivating storytelling about his childhood and heritage in the old country. As he spoke in his native tongue, the vibrant memories of his youth seemed to physically materialize, dancing in the reflections of his thick, expressive glasses. This artwork embodies his past, turning our quiet conversations into a painting of a man and his cherished history.
