OJT EATS | Old Curry
A short one this week and another curry place in Taiwan. This week, it’s Old Curry on Shi Da Road. It’s a tiny little place right on the main road and with it being so close to Taiwan Normal University, it’s often packed with students. We turned up early one day for a quick lunch and managed to catch it while it was quiet.
You can tell it’s a bit of a student haunt just by looking at the portion size! This was a chicken curry with some pretty hefty chunks of meat and then there were scrambled eggs on top, mushrooms, a couple of potato wedges, pitta bread, mushrooms and a croquette; not to mention the mound of rice as well! This is definitely not the place to go if you are trying to cut carbs! The curry sauce was pretty tasty but didn’t have the depth of flavour that a few of the other places had but still, definitely good enough to satisfy any curry cravings you might have.
The other plate we had was a beef curry. This came with a fried egg, those wedges and pitta bread again, some big chunks of beef and a croquette as well. Pitta bread and wedges are an unusual curry topping but they were great for soaking up the sauce so hey, why not? The croquette was very well fried and the fried egg was just gooey enough. SImilar to the chicken, the beef sauce was good without being anything too special.
All in all, I can see why this place is popular with students. The dishes come in huge portions for a reasonable price and while it may not be the best curry we’ve had in Taipei, is still pretty tasty and ideal for a quick weekday lunch.
