JOMP August Photo Challenge - August 17

Theme: Oldest Book

I will interpret "oldest" as the book I've had longest in my possession. I've had this copy of Elizabeth Goudge's The Little White Horse since I was 11 (ish?). I am now 26.

Its pages are yellowing, cover has a lot of wear, I wrote my name on it, and I corrected the blurb on the back with a Sharpie because it incorrectly referred to Maria Merryweather's guardian as her uncle instead of her cousin.

My sister who is older than me by 16 years bought this book for me when we went to Barnes and Noble one time. I've always had a rocky relationship with her, but I can't say she never did nice things for me. Although I remember showing her my pick and her asking me "you're not picking it just because you like the picture, right?" with judgement plainly present on her face. that was totally the reason tho

I also remember the cashier being really nice and saying "The Little White Horse for the little white girl! 😊😊😊" as he passed the book to me. In hindsight that sounds really weird and I'm also not white lol

Surya Siddhanta : the oldest book on Astronomy...

Some say, it is a few million years old. The Sun-God, Surya is supposed to have recited it to the Asura architect - Maya, father-in-law of Ravana. Thus, Maya is considered to be its first author. Then it got lost in the mist of time.

It resurfaced in the 4th or 5th century AD and was compiled by a scholar called Varahamihira, who as per some sources, was one of the navaratnas of King Vikramaditya of Ujjain. It again got lost in the Kalachakra.

In 1860, an Englishman called Burgess, found a 12th century manuscript of Surya Siddhanta and translated it to English.

I read somewhere that this book is considered the oldest book ever. But let's not stretch that point. In any case, Surya Siddhanta can safely be considered to be the oldest surviving book on Astronomy.

The book had 14 chapters. Just look what all it covers.

Some interesting, eye-openers from the Surya Siddhanta:

The average length of the tropical year was calculated as 365.2421756 days, which is only 1.4 seconds shorter than the modern value of 365.2421904 days!

Time taken for one complete revolution for other planets is so close to modern estimates. This was atleast thousand years before the earth was 'discovered' to be round by the modern west!

The diameter of Mercury was estimated to be 3,008 miles, a difference of less than 1% from the currently accepted diameter of 3,032 miles. It also estimates the diameter of Saturn as 73,882 miles, which again has a difference of less than 1% from the currently accepted diameter of 74,580.

The book says - Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, the planets, constellations, the moon and the sun are held in orbit due to this attraction. It was not until 1687 that Sir Isaac Newton re-discovered the Law of Gravity.

Surya Siddhanta says that both Spirituality and Science search for the Ultimate Truth. They are not mutually exclusive!

Kinda makes me wanna buy it and read it. I will!
