After working so hard in the Academy, Charlie had finally graduated and now gotten so lucky as to secure an interview with the CMO of none other than THE USS Enterprise. (And WITHOUT her Admiral Mother’s help at that!).

The dentist fiddled with her skirt as looked around the Mess Hall for Doctor McCoy. Once she spotted him, Charlie forced herself to walk (wouldn’t do to trip) over to him and extended her hand. Her hazel eyes met his blue ones briefly before flitting away.

“Good afternoon, Doctor McCoy. I’m Lieutenant Charlotte Maldonado, DDS.”

45. Fingerless gloves

Scotty shrugged, blushing lightly as he tugged on the lovingly made gloves, fussing with the worn but still-visible embroidered dragons on the backs of his hands. “Ah had them made out of my first paycheck as a teacher, so Ah could work and keep my hands warm at the same time. You know how winters at the non-American academies are.”

Exhaustion lines still creased her face from her long labor, but when Queenie held Cailin in her arms she was more content than she’d felt in a long time.

She wasn’t going to let him go for even longer.

Well, she did have to when the good doctor came in to check on them. Leonard had never pried about who the father was through the whole process, had held her hand despite how she must have been causing nerve damage through the birth, and had in general been the best doctor she could have asked for. 

She wouldn’t forget it.

“Thank you for everything. Do you give him a clean bill of health, then?”

Jocelyn blinked in surprise, usually she at least got a kiss or a wink before he attacked. He must have really missed her. The chemical was bitter in the back of her throat as she involuntarily breathed in. 

“Goodnight, doctor. I’ll see you in the mo-” Eyelids heavy, she smiled as she slid to the floor. He was quite the man, that Leonard McCoy.

“Still alive, baby?”

“More than I’ve ever been.” Jocelyn smirked, dropping the crumpled heap of a body to the floor. “And headed your way, honey.” She clicked off the communicator as she stalked down the hallway. It was more of a warning than she usually gave him.

“Shh… Shh, I’m here… It’s okay, it’s over…”

“I…I…” She’s not sure she should be talking to hallucinations. That has to be what this is. She’s been in this cell too long. Her chest is heaving, her breath jagged and tearing at her chest. “I t-t-told them I didn’t know anything. The-e-y don’t believe me.” Her whole body is shaking, scared to believe in the figure in front of her.

Of course she’d drawn the short end of the stick, Jocelyn thought to herself. Her dress uniform was stifling her, the high collar scratching at her neck. The new research wing of the Federation hospital was holding its opening ceremonies, and a representative from every division was present. Jocelyn wasn’t sure how it had been decided she would go, but she’d gotten her orders, and so here she was.

People milled about the over filled hall and the buzz of human chatter filled the air. Jocelyn smoothed the white skirt of her uniform, internally knowing that she would drop something on it by the end of the evening. Most likely the glass of wine she was holding. She had sought out the drink upon arrival, hoping it would make the evening more bearable. 

The place was brand new and already smelled like a hospital. The antiseptic air was chilled, and she found herself looking up at the vaulted white ceilings, distracted from the proceedings around her. Her glass tilted and the red liquid inside tilted dangerously towards the floor.
