Old School EDM vs. New School
Here is a very interesting article from the Village Voice about Old School vs. New School EDM. At Votlayic, we’ve been thinking about this for awhile actually. The industry is changing - for better or worse (we think its for the better - growth = opportunity). We see the change as having both upside and downside for the industry and artists in general. As the scene and mainstream acceptance continues to trend, the pie will be larger and the appeal will continue to draw in fans and organically grow the entire industry. We saw it first hand 10-15 years ago in Europe and now its happening here in the US.
Our view is that its OK to have different preferences even within genres. New artists can learn a lot from their predecessors. One thing is clear though - artists need to truly love what they are doing and love the music - lets not lose that feel as the scene grows. Artists should not be bigger than the community - they should lead it and transform it - but its always about the music and culture. Its how EDM started and how it will continue to takeover the mainstream.
