Sony shows the thinnest OLED faceplate in the world Thickness is only 0.2 millimetres
On 2008 display unit big exhibitions that Japan hold, Japanese Sony has shown a section of thinnest OLED (organic luminescent diode) in the world Faceplate prototype, the thickness is only 0.2 millimetres.
Sony shows, OLED prototype size that develops newly is 3.5 inches, definition is that 320 looks like plain X 240 picture element, because picture element of OLED can oneself shiny, need other light source, so display unit that technology makes this very thin, the thickness is probably 1 millimetre to 2 millimetre.
The liquid crystal faceplate usually needs to adopt the rear-projection light source, thus increase the thickness of the faceplate. This means under engineering level that uses at present at least, the liquid crystal faceplate is unable to compete with OLED faceplate in reducing the thickness.
Sony first batch of OLED TVs named XEL-1 were put on market last year, XEL-1 TV adopted 11 inches of OLED faceplates. Thickness is only 1.4 millimetres. Because Sony hide in the intersection of television and base large part of a circuit, XEL-1 thickness of display unit 3 millimetres.
Compared with liquid crystal faceplate, OLED consumes lower energy. Except can reveal the picture moved fast, the picture color that OLED offers is very lifelike. A lot of faceplate manufacturers are developing OLED technology at present.
