WVU wins with some luck, but can the 'Eers keep Luck?
West Virginia blew a 10-point, fourth-quarter lead at TCU on Saturday but managed to win 30-27 in overtime. It's hard to get too excited about the victory, however, because it appears as if WVU is about to lose its athletic director. Oliver Luck, who earned his undergraduate degree and played QB at West Virginia, is expected to be named to the same position at Texas, perhaps as early as this week. Adding insult to injury is the fact that Texas visits Morgantown next Saturday. Can you say awkward? Losing Luck would be a major blow to WVU. He helped get West Virginia out of the Big East and into the Big 12 and, while the results on the football field and the basketball court haven't been great, helped solidify the school's athletic future in big-time college athletics for years to come. He also helped enhance the school's baseball program (a new stadium is coming). He's on the 13-person College Football Playoff committee, overseeing the playoff that will begin at the end of the 2014 season. And, of course, he got WVU to sell beer in the football stadium. It hasn't all been good for Luck at West Virginia since he arrived in 2010, however. His handling of the Bill Stewart-Dana Holgersen transition was an epic fail, and he has rubbed some at WVU -- especially "the old guard" -- the wrong way. Overall, though, he has done a tremendous job and most fans will likely wish him well if he opts to leave WVU for Texas. This won't be a Rich Rodriguez fiasco circa 2007. Although highly unlikely, it would be nice if Luck turned down the Texas job if offered. Or maybe he'll bomb his interview and the Longhorns would take a pass (Arkansas AD Jeff Long is among the other candidates). It would be nice if he stuck around. There's much more work to be done, especially in football and basketball. The big winner of next Saturday's Texas-WVU game will likely be decided before kickoff -- who gets Oliver Luck? Texas is the heavy favorite, but WVU just might pull off a surprise. The Mountaineers just beat TCU, after all.
