In 2013, inspired by a desire to pull Portland residents away from their routines long enough to appreciate the surrounding creativity, Gage Hamilton, Matt Wagner, and Tia Vanich started Forest for the Trees NW. For FFTTNW 2015 Seattle artist Olivia Knapp was asked to paint this wall at Stark and SE 78th in the Montavilla neighborhood of Portland. After studying fashion design at the Art Institute of Chicago and Parsons, and working as a textile designer for several years Knapp says she is now devoting most of her time to her detailed drawings. Hi Fructose reports that “Inspired by centuries-old illustrations in scientific texts, she carefully studies the techniques of 16th-century master engravers, boiling her cross-hatching techniques down to a science to achieve a rich range of values and convincing depth.” Worth additional attention is Knapp’s mastery of the rare 16th century technique known as “dot and lozenge”—the use of a dot placed inside the diamond shapes as a means of creating value transitions. @hifructosemag @ffttnw @oliviaknappart @scenesfromthesidewalk
